Mercer Falters to Georgia Tech, 11-3, at Home
3/28/2017 10:03:00 PM | Baseball
16 Bears see the field in mid-week defeat
Â
A full house of 2,267 attendees were on hand for the game despite the Bears' second straight loss, which dropped them to 21-6 overall and 14-3 on their home turf. Georgia Tech improved to 14-9 with the win.
Â
Mercer claimed a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a sacrifice fly by Hunter Bening that scored Charlie Madden. It was all Yellow Jackets from there on, however, as they used a four-run third inning and three-run seventh inning to win the first of two meetings between the programs this season.
Â
Six Bears took the mound including starter Kevin Coulter, who took the loss and moved to 2-2. A plethora of late-game substitutions led to Mercer using 16 position players in total. Freshman Alex Crotty hit his first career home run on the first pitch he saw in a pinch-hit at bat in the seventh.
Â
PLAYER OF THE GAME
While Crotty's late home run did not change the outcome of Tuesday's game, it provided a jolt to a quiet Mercer offense. The freshman is batting .320 with eight hits in 24 at bats this season.
Â
STAT OF THE GAME
Mercer's pitching staff struck out 14 Georgia Tech batters. Robert Broom and Nick Spear had three apiece while each pitcher notched at least one.
Â
COACH GIBSON'S TAKE
"Georgia Tech beat us in all phases tonight. That's a good club but we'll have another chance to play them this season. They were just really good.
Â
"We've got to raise our level of play moving forward…we got off to a good start but teams are going to give us their best from now on. ETSU played us hard, Georgia Tech played us hard and Furman will be good this weekend."
Â
