Zach Graveno improves to 5-0 on the mound
Â
Five runs over the first three frames pushed the Bears (29-6) to their sixth in-state win. Mercer never trailed the Panthers (11-21), who lost their 11th consecutive contest.
Â
Zach Graveno (5-0) earned the win with three hitless innings of relief after taking over for Chase Burks, who started and lasted only one frame. Burks allowed two runs on four hits. Christian Vann, who pumped out three strikeouts, followed up Graveno's effort with another two hitless innings.
Â
A two-out, bases-clearing double to the gap by Hunter Bening helped Mercer capitalize on three of its first five batters reaching base in the first inning. After the Panthers cut the lead to one run in the home half of the first, Mercer responded with five unanswered over the next five frames, keyed by RBI singles from Alex Crotty, Ryan Hagan and Danny Edgeworth.
Â
Charlie Madden added a two-run single in a three-run ninth to put the game away for good after Georgia State put another pair on the board with a four-hit eighth inning.
Â
PLAYER OF THE GAME
A committee day on the mound calls for co-players of the game Tuesday. Graveno and Vann were nearly flawless over five combined innings of work, allowing no hits while walking two and striking out five Panthers. Their effort allowed Mercer to pull away after a tight first inning in Atlanta.
Â
STAT OF THE GAME
Charlie Madden and Danny Edgeworth finished with three hits apiece for their 11th and 15th multi-hit performances of the season. The two seniors combined to score four runs and added three RBIs.

COACH GIBSON'S TAKE
"This was another great team win for us as our pitching staff led us with an excellent overall performance. We had some big moments at the plate; Hunter Bening got us off to the start we wanted with a three-run double. Charlie [Madden] and Danny Edgeworth were great…Alex Crotty continues to get better as well."
