Bears erase early four-run deficit to win 10th straight conference game
Â
Mercer (33-7, 12-1 SoCon) won its 10th straight conference game after trailing 4-0 early against one of the league's top pitchers, left-hander JP Sears. The Bears knocked Sears out of the game by the sixth inning and plated three runs over the final three frames to drop The Citadel to 12-23 (3-7) on the season.
Â
Alex Hanson scored the game-winning run on Madden's single after reaching base with a hit-by-pitch. A sacrifice bunt by JT Thomas moved Hanson over to second base, giving way to Madden. Trailing 5-3 entering the eighth, Mercer tied it up with a bases-loaded walk by Ryan Hagan and a sacrifice fly by Hanson in the following at bat. The two runs came after Jackson Ware (single), Hunter Bening (walk) and Trey Truitt (single) all reached base to open the frame.
Â
Robert Broom (7-1) was stellar once again out of the bullpen, logging four innings of one-hit, scoreless ball to earn the win. His effort bridged the gap to Nick Spear, who struck out the final batter of the game for his seventh save.
Â
The Citadel struck first with four runs on five hits in the second inning against Ryan Askew. A throwing error at shortstop put runners on the corners with no outs and gave way to three RBI hits in the next four at bats. Askew finished the day with 5.2 innings pitched, allowing five runs on eight hits.
Â
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Robert Broom allowed only one hit to the Bulldogs over a critical four innings of work as the Bears' bats staged their rally. Broom has allowed only three hits over his last three appearances (11 innings) while striking out 16 batters.
Â
STAT OF THE GAME
Citadel ace JP Sears tossed only six innings, marking his second-shortest outing of an impressive year. The Bears tagged the southpaw for eight hits, which tied his season-high in hits allowed.
Â
COACH GIBSON'S TAKE
"Our guys did a great job of finding a way to win a tough game tonight. The Citadel's starter is one of the best in this league and we had good at bats against him before breaking through late in the game and capped it off with Charlie [Madden's] hit.
Â
"Robert Broom was very good tonight in relief while Ryan Askew and Nick Spear played their roles as well for us."
