Second straight loss to the Eagles ends in a walk-off
STATESBORO, Ga. – No. 22 (NCBWA) Mercer fell in extra innings for the first time all season as Georgia Southern defeated the Bears on a walk-off wild pitch Wednesday night at J.I. Clements Stadium.
Â
A pair of wild pitches with two runners on in the bottom of the 10th resulted in the Eagles (28-14) defeating Mercer (35-9) for the second time in as many days. The game-winning run reached base with a one-out walk. Nick Spear (5-1) took the loss on the mound.
Â
With Mercer trailing 3-1 entering the seventh, JT Thomas and Danny Edgeworth tied it up with a sacrifice fly and RBI double, respectively. Trey Truitt led off the inning with a single and eventually scored. However, only one Bear reached base the rest of the night.
Â
Truitt opened the game's scoring with a RBI single through the right side in the second inning, scoring Charlie Madden after his leadoff single. A fielding error by Mercer and three straight hits by the Eagles gave way to a two-run deficit for Mercer after four innings of play. Zach Graveno entered the inning but did not finish it, tossing a career-long 3.2 innings before Mercer went to the bullpen in favor of Robert Broom.
Â
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Christian Vann tied a career-high six strikeouts with three innings of work. The junior allowed three hits and walked one batter but held the Eagles scoreless from the seventh through ninth innings after inheriting a runner.
