Alex Hanson collects two hits in the 6-1 loss
MACON, Ga. – Mercer fell to Kennesaw State, 6-1, in its final game of nonconference and in-state play Tuesday night at OrthoGeorgia Park.
Â
Alex Hanson went 2-for-2 with a double and one run scored, but the Bears (38-13) left nine runners on base and mustered only one run while Kennesaw State (23-27) jumped out to a four-run lead by the end of the fourth inning. Mercer finished nonconference play at 21-9 and in-state action at 6-5.
Â
Mercer claimed an early 1-0 lead on a RBI single by Danny Edgeworth in the first, but the visiting Owls jumped on starting pitcher Zach Graveno with a three-run home run in the top of the second and did not look back. Christian Vann logged 3.2 solid innings of relief from the fourth into the seventh, striking out four batters and surrendering only one hit, a solo home run on the first pitch he threw.
Â
The Bears return to action Thursday at OrthoGeorgia Park against Southern Conference foe Western Carolina. The three-game conference series concludes Mercer's regular season slate.
Â
Coach Gibson's Take
"I thought we pitched well enough to win tonight but the bats just didn't get it done. It was my fault that we weren't ready to play; I feel like we have been ready to go the majority of our 50-plus games we've played this year, but tonight we just didn't get it done.
Â
"A hit here or there could've changed things, but at the end of the day Kennesaw State played well. We'll get to redeem ourselves Thursday night against Western Carolina."
Â
Player of the Game
Vann's relief effort was nearly flawless as he allowed only one hit and run on a solo home shot by Matt Mixon. The junior allowed only two other baserunners due to a hit-by-pitch and walk while striking out four.
Â
Stat of the Day
Alex Hanson (2-for-2, one walk) and JT Thomas (two walks) extended their reached base streaks to 21 games apiece. The 21-game streaks are the longest by a Bear this season.
