Bears Defeated by Furman in SoCon Quarterfinals

Top-seeded Mercer will face No. 6 Samford in elimination game Friday afternoon
GREENVILLE, S.C. – Top-seeded Mercer surrendered 17 hits and fell to No. 4 Furman, 6-1, in the quarterfinals of the Southern Conference Championship presented by Holston Gases at Fluor Field Thursday night.
Â
Furman (31-26) tagged right-hander Kevin Coulter for four runs in the second inning and led by as many as five by the end of the fourth as Mercer (39-16) was defeated for only the third time in 11 SoCon Championship games. Furman starting pitcher Grant Schuermann went eight innings despite Mercer collecting nine hits off the left-hander.
Â
The Bears will face No. 6 Samford at 3:30 p.m. Friday in an elimination game. Samford played twice Thursday, falling to No. 3 UNCG, 6-3, before defeating the defending champion Western Carolina, 6-1. Furman advances to the semifinals and will play the winner of UNCG and No. 7 ETSU at noon Saturday.
Â
Mercer's lone run came when Ryan Hagan scored on a groundout by JT Thomas back to the pitcher. Alex Hanson went 3-for-4 with a double and Jackson Ware went 2-for-4, but Mercer left nine runners on base throughout the game.
Â
Landon Kay helped Furman draw first blood with a solo home run to center field in the top of the second. Five consecutive singles, the last two of which scored three total runs, followed Kay's long ball later in the inning.
Â
Coach Gibson's Take
"We didn't put up much of a fight offensively tonight. We hit some balls hard – [Alex] Hanson had a good game – but Furman capitalized for the big second inning. Besides that, it could have been a good game.
Â
"You have got to tip your cap to Furman's guy [Schuermann]; he did a good job tonight. We have to be better offensively in tournament play and rise to the challenge. It will be interesting to see how we respond against Samford. We have not been in this position in the SoCon before, so let's see what we can do."
Â
Player of the Game
Alex Hanson's 20th multi-hit performance of the year put him on base three times. The junior has collected at least one hit in both tournament contests so far this week.
Â
Stat of the Game
Mercer went 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position against a pair of Furman pitchers.
