10/27/2018 6:28:00 PM | Football
Bears drop road contest, 42-21, to host Wofford
Â
The Bears (4-4, 3-2 SoCon) lost to Wofford (6-2, 5-1) for the fifth time since joining the Southern Conference in 2014 as their offense tallied just seven points before the fourth quarter. Defensively, the Bears recorded two turnovers on downs in the first quarter and added a pair of interceptions.
Â
Turning Point
Wofford scored touchdowns on four consecutive drives in the third and fourth quarters to pull away from Mercer, which trailed by only 14 points at halftime. A seven-yard touchdown rush by Andre Stoddard with six minutes and 35 seconds remaining in the frame sparked the Terriers' dominant second half.
Â
Offensive Star
Tyray Devezin rushed for 97 yards and one touchdown on a career-high 18 carries. Devezin was the focus of Mercer's run game after SoCon rushing leader Tee Mitchell did not return after suffering an injury in the first quarter.
Â
Defensive Star
Malique Fleming registered a career-high 12 tackles (eight solo, four assisted) and added one tackle for loss at the free safety position.
Â
How It Happened
Mercer's defense carried the team through the first half by forcing a pair of turnovers on downs in a scoreless first quarter and tallying two interceptions in the second quarter. Austin Wysor came up with fourth-down tackles on consecutive Wofford drives in Mercer territory to keep the Terriers from threatening in the first quarter.
Â
Wofford grabbed ahold of the momentum in the second quarter however, as quarterback Joe Newman found TJ Luther for a 71-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the quarter. After the Bears failed to convert a 4th-and-5 situation with a fake punt attempt, Wofford scored a second touchdown on a three-play, 55-yard drive that ended with a 14-yard touchdown run. LeMarkus Bailey and Andrew Pettit came up with the two interceptions on consecutive drives with less than four minutes in the second quarter. The Bears trailed 14-0 at halftime.
Â
Wofford scored touchdowns on its first four drives of the second half to pull away. Mercer got on the scoreboard for the first time with 3:50 left in the third quarter on a 17-yard touchdown reception by Marquise Irvin. The Bears later added to their points total with a 36-yard touchdown run by Tyray Devezin and a 25-yard touchdown pass by Harrison Frost to Tucker Cannon.

Quotables
Bobby Lamb on the loss…
"It was very difficult loss…we put our hearts into this game, like we do with every game. We knew coming to Wofford on the road would be difficult; they have a great program and are tough to beat on their own field.
Â
"We didn't execute on a high level today. I thought our defense played extremely well in the first half when we didn't get much offensive production. It was a tough conference loss, but we can't let this beat us next week when we turn our focus to ETSU and our Homecoming game at Five Star Stadium."
Â
Notables
» Marquise Irvin set a program record with his 17th career touchdown reception. He broke a tie that he held with former teammate Chandler Curtis (2014-17).
» LeMarkus Bailey and Andrew Pettit's interceptions were the third and first of their respective careers.
» Devezin's 18 carries were a career-high.
» Malique Fleming set a career-high with 12 tackles.
» Harrison Frost made his collegiate debut at quarterback, leading Mercer to a touchdown on its final drive of the game. He was 5-of-8 passing for 61 yards and hit Tucker Cannon for his second career touchdown reception.
» David Durden returned two kickoffs for 59 yards, including a 46-yard return in the third quarter.
