Bears Win 2018 Idle Hour Collegiate Championship

Mercer wins third straight Idle Hour Collegiate, Romeo earns runner-up honors
MACON, Ga. – The Mercer women's golf team defended its home turf by winning the third annual Idle Hour Collegiate Championship while senior Terese Romeo earned individual runner-up honors following Tuesday's third round at Idle Hour Golf Club.

Mercer (286-287-297) shot 6-over-par (870) over the 54-hole tournament to run away with a 22-stroke victory over the rest of the 13-team field. It is the third straight year the Bears have won the Idle Hour Collegiate Championship.

Tuesday's third round opened with an 8 a.m. shotgun start. All seven Bears who played in the tournament finished tied for 24th or lower in the individual standings.

After entering Tuesday's third round with a healthy advantage over the rest of the field, Mercer did not relinquish its lead despite shooting 9-over-par over the final 18 holes. The next closest team to Mercer was runner-up Toledo (+28), followed by Eastern Kentucky (+34).
All seven Bears, including a pair of individual players, finished inside the top 24. Senior Terese Romeo, who was playing in her final collegiate tournament – Romeo will graduate early in December – shot a career-low 211 (70-70-71) to lead the way and earn runner-up honors. Mary Janiga (+2) and Payton Schanen (+3) finished inside the top six as well.

Freshman Carol Pyon had the Bears' second-best individual round on Tuesday, shooting even-par 72 with six birdies.

The Bears have concluded their 2018 fall slate. Their next tournament will be the Lake Oconee Invitational, held in Greensboro, Ga. on Feb. 16-17.
