Freshman wide receiver collects first All-American honor
MACON, Ga. – Mercer wide receiver David Durden was named to the HERO Sports FCS Freshman All-American Team on Monday after an impressive rookie season for the Bears.
Â
Durden earned Honorable Mention honors as an all-purpose player. The wide receiver and kick returner made an immediate impact at Mercer and finished his freshman season with 637 all-purpose yards (407 receiving, 221 kick return and 11 passing) and seven total touchdowns.
Â
The Midville, Ga., native had a break-out month of October, totaling over 400 all-purpose yards and five total touchdowns in a three-game span. Durden's best single-game performance came on the road at Yale on Oct. 13 when he hauled in three passes – including two touchdowns – for 122 yards and added a third touchdown on an 11-yard passing score on a trick play. He followed up the performance the next week against Western Carolina with a school-record 95-yard kick return for a touchdown.
Â
Durden earned Southern Conference All-Freshman Team honors in November. He finished the 2018 season tied for the team lead in touchdown receptions (five) while ranking third in receptions (18) and receiving yards (407).
