Mercer’s Shiel, Fisher to Compete in 2018 FCS Bowl

Pair of senior Bears will showcase their talents at annual all-star game
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – A pair of Mercer football seniors will compete in the 2018 edition of the annual FCS Bowl on Sunday, Dec. 9 at Bethune-Cookman's Daytona Beach Stadium.

Graduate senior punter Matt Shiel and senior kicker Cole Fisher were invited to play in the annual all-star game, which will be streamed live online via FloFootball beginning at 1:30 p.m. (ET) on Sunday. Shiel will wear jersey No. 30 for the National Team (Blue) and Fisher will wear No. 98 for the American Team (White).

Shiel ranked as one of the top punters in the FCS this fall, helping Mercer lead the nation in net punting (40.5 net yards per punt). The Doncaster, Australia, native was eighth nationally and second in the Southern Conference with an average of 43.6 yards per punt, totaling 2,265 yards on 52 punts. Shiel leaves Mercer as the program's most prolific punter, recording school records of 96 punts, 4,206 yards and an average of 43.8 yards per punt.

Fisher, a native of Walnut Grove, Ga., set Mercer's all-time scoring record this fall and leaves Mercer with 217 career points scored on 36 field goals and 109 made extra-points. The three-year starter made 12-of-16 field goal attempts this season and nailed all 40 of his extra-point attempts, a career-high. Fisher, who also handled kickoff duties for the Bears over the last two seasons, earned SoCon Special Teams Player of the Week honors twice in his career.

The FCS National Bowl is an annual post-season college football all-star game consisting of the top players from college football FCS schools. The inaugural FCS National Bowl was played in December 2014 at FIU Stadium and moved to Daytona Beach Stadium in Daytona Beach, Fla. in 2016. The Nation Bowl and FCS Bowl all-star weekend for non-FBS schools has been the only games of their kind to attract numerous NFL and CFL scouts.

Former Mercer quarterback John Russ was named the National Team Offensive MVP at the 2016 FCS Bowl when he threw for 109 yards and a touchdown while leading his team in rushing yards.
