Mercer Drops Series Finale to Bethune-Cookman
2/18/2018 6:20:00 PM | Baseball
Alex Hanson registers three RBIs in the 8-6 loss
Â
The Bears (2-1) scored five runs over the final three innings, but a three-run ninth inning by Bethune-Cookman (1-2) – keyed by a costly Mercer error – quelled their chances of completing the season-opening sweep at home. Kevin Coulter took the loss for Mercer, going four innings while allowing three runs and striking out five.
Â
Trailing 4-1 entering the bottom of the seventh, Mercer received a two-run pinch-hit single from Jordan Ammons that brought the Bears within one run. The Wildcats earned one run back in the top of the eighth, but Sean McDermott tightened the game up once again with a two-out RBI-single in the home half, plating Brandon Michie.
Â
After Bethune-Cookman extended its lead to four runs in the top of the ninth, Alex Hanson made things interesting with a two-run home run, which proved to be Mercer's final punch in its first loss of the season.

Coach Gibson's Take
On still claiming the series win despite Sunday's loss:
"If we heard that we'd [win] this series back in August, we would have taken it for sure," said head coach Craig Gibson. "You've got to credit Bethune-Cookman; they've got a great club with three really good [starting pitcher] arms as well as a solid bullpen.
Â
"We've got lots of new pieces that I thought played well this weekend. We've got to be better defensively and in situational hitting moments, but I like where we are right now."
Â
On late rally in Sunday's loss:
"You're not a good club until you come from behind. You always have a chance to win. In this park, you always have a chance. We hit a ball out of the park in the ninth [inning] to get closer before their third baseman made a nice play at the end."
Â
Player of the Game
Alex Hanson was one of few sparkplugs for the Bears on Sunday, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs, one run scored and two walks. The senior doubled in the fourth before knocking a two-run home run in the ninth to cut Bethune-Cookman's lead to two runs.
