Mercer remains undefeated against in-state opponents
MACON, Ga. – Mercer remained undefeated against in-state foes with a 6-2 win at Georgia Tech as four Bears held one of the nation's hottest offenses to its fewest hits of the season Wednesday night at Russ Chandler Stadium.
Â
The host Yellow Jackets (12-9) entered the contest with a .324 team batting average, which ranked seventh nationally, and had defeated No. 6 Auburn, 6-4, the night prior. Mercer (17-5) improved to 5-0 against in-state opponents.
Â
An early multi-run cushion gave Mercer starting pitcher Christian Vann breathing room to hold Georgia Tech to one run on three hits through 3.2 frames. The left-hander got into trouble by walking the bases loaded in the fourth, but was relieved by Robert Broom, who forced an inning-ending ground out to keep the Yellow Jackets at bay. Broom and Zach Graveno held Georgia Tech hitless from the fourth to eighth innings.
Â
Jackson Ware put numbers on the board in a hurry for Mercer with a two-run double in the top of the first inning. Ware's hit down the right-field line scored Alex Hanson, who doubled on the first pitch of the game, and Trey Truitt, who walked. The Bears extended their lead to 6-1 through the fourth inning with a trio of sacrifice flies by David Posas (two) and Hanson as well as a RBI single by Kyle Dockus.
Â
Georgia Tech cut into Mercer's lead on a RBI double by Joey Bart in the ninth before Nick Spear relieved Graveno to recorded the final out of the contest.
Â
Coach Gibson's Take
Opening statement:
"We were really good tonight and it all started with Christian Vann on the mound," said head coach Craig Gibson. "I always tell the guys; whenever you go on the road, you have to play well early on in the game.
Â
"We pitched well early and Robert Broom was outstanding for us in relief. I'm really proud of Zach Graveno's effort tonight…we need No. 22 to be solid for us this season. Nick Spear did his job at the end as well."
Â
On Mercer's situational hitting:
"We executed at the plate tonight in two-strike situations and run-scoring opportunities. Coach [Willie] Stewart has really been doing well with our team on those types of at bats lately. Drew Lingo and Jackson Ware were a pair of seniors who really stepped up for us tonight when we needed it."
Â
Player of the Game
Robert Broom not only silenced the Yellow Jackets over 3.1 innings midgame, but he halted a potential rally in the fourth inning with a two-out, bases-loaded ground out. The sidewinder struck out three Yellow Jackets and lowered his season earned run average to 1.35.
