Mercer takes series opener after game suspended Thursday night
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Mercer sealed a 10-4 victory over ETSU in Southern Conference action Friday afternoon at Thomas Stadium after the series opener was suspended Thursday night because of inclement weather.
Â
The Bears (21-6, 3-1 SoCon) led 10-3 with one runner on base and no outs in the top of the ninth inning Thursday night when ETSU officials halted play and eventually suspended the game until Friday.
Â
Mercer capitalized on two ETSU (14-8, 2-2) errors in the top of the first inning to take a three-run lead. Trey Truitt singled to center field to score RJ Yeager (single) and advanced to third base when the ETSU center fielder misplayed the hit, which allowed JT Thomas – who reached on a fielding error at third base – to score as well. Truitt scored the following at bat on a safety squeeze by Jackson Ware.
Â
ETSU touched up Mercer starting pitcher Austin Cox with a solo home run in the fourth and three singles in four at bats in the fifth to cut the Bears' lead to one run through five frames of action. However, it was all Mercer from that point on as Cox retired the final seven batters he faced to make it through the seventh and the Bears' bats continued to thrive.
Â
Ware and David Posas both tallied RBI singles in the sixth to extend Mercer's lead to three runs. The duo rose to the occasion again in the following inning with a pair of two-RBI singles, providing Mercer with six runs of insurance. Trey Truitt added a solo home run in the top of the ninth shortly before play was suspended.
Â
Ben Brock and Austin Lord closed out the contest Friday on the mound.
Â
Player of the Game
Jackson Ware provided senior leadership Thursday as he tied his career-high with four hits (4-for-4) and added four RBI, one run and a sacrifice bunt. It was Ware's second consecutive four-RBI game, giving him 24 for the season.
