Mercer Falls to Georgia Tech in Midweek Clash
4/10/2018 11:07:00 PM | Baseball
Bears lose four-run lead in 16-8 defeat at home
Â
The visiting Yellow Jackets (20-13) scored all 16 of their runs over the final four innings as Mercer (26-9) was unable to match their 16-hit performance, which included five home runs. Mercer fell to 7-1 against Peach State teams with the loss.
Â
Eight Bears saw action on the mound in what was a predetermined staff day. Nick Spear (2-1) took the loss despite his two runs allowed being unearned. Mercer committed a season-high four errors defensively, including two costly mistakes in the sixth and seventh innings that gave Georgia Tech momentum.
Â
With the contest tied, 5-5, in the top of the sixth, a throwing error with two outs allowed Georgia Tech to score the go-ahead run and eventually plate a second run to take a 7-5 lead it never surrendered. Mercer owned an early 4-0 lead after a two-run double by Jordan Ammons and two-run single by Alex Hanson in consecutive at bats. Georgia Tech tied the contest with a grand slam by Kyle McCann in the fifth.
Â
Mercer added three runs in the seventh and eighth innings on a two-run single by Brandon Michie – who played for the first time since March 7 – and a RBI double by Trey Truitt.
Â
Coach Gibson's Take
"This was a tough loss to take on our home turf, especially when it was a one-run ball game until late in the contest when we made a few defensive mistakes that threw the game away," said head coach Craig Gibson. "Georgia Tech came out swinging, and they are a good offensive club.
Â
"I'm confident that we'll learn from this loss and use it for the better moving forward into the rest of our season. We saw a lot of guys get in the game tonight and in order to compete for a championship, you need multiple players step up and be ready to compete."
Â
Player of the Game
In his first game back after breaking the hamate bone in his right hand, Brandon Michie reached base four times and went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs driven in. The junior started at first base defensively and added one run for the night.
