Graveno tosses four scoreless frames in the 4-2 defeat
DECATUR, Ga. – Mercer's offensive funk continued in a 4-2 loss to in-state rival Georgia State on Wednesday night at the GSU Baseball Complex.
Â
The Bears (26-13) collected six hits, including a pair of doubles, but struggled with runners in scoring position (2-for-11) en route to their fifth straight loss. Georgia State snapped a three-game skid and improved to 18-18 overall.
Â
Zach Graveno was effective in his third start of the season, tossing four scoreless innings with four strikeouts and three hits allowed. The Panthers struck quickly after Graveno was relieved, however, with a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth off Nick Spear and never trailed afterward.
Â
Mercer responded in the following frame as RJ Yeager scored on a sacrifice fly by JT Thomas. Yeager reached with a walk and advanced two bases on a failed pick-off attempt at first base before scoring. The Bears threatened to plate the tying run after Trey Truitt doubled to the wall in the following at bat, but he was eventually stranded at third base.
Â
After Georgia State added two runs over the seventh and eighth innings, Mercer staged a rally in the top of the ninth before coming up shortly. Sean McDermott reached base on a hit-by-pitch to open the inning and scored on a RBI single by David Posas through the left side of the infield three at-bats later. Mercer put the tying run on second base with one out before seeing its rally quelled.
Â
Player of the Game
Zach Graveno held the Panthers to three hits over the first four frames on 71 pitches to earn Wednesday's honors. Although he did not receive run support, the sophomore right-hander tossed at least three innings for the sixth time this season and struck out four Panthers, including two in the first inning.
Â
Coach Gibson's Take
"We got a great start on the road by Zach Graveno and we hit some balls hard, but the difference in the game was a couple balls [Georgia State] hit out of the park," said head coach Craig Gibson. "We have to hit the ball better with runners in scoring position.
Â
"I thought JT Thomas swung the bat well as did Trey Truitt. We have to continue to regroup and prepare for our weekend on the road at Western Carolina."
