Mercer Drops Series to Furman Despite Late Rally
4/8/2018 8:39:00 PM | Baseball
Bears score four in bottom of the ninth but come up short
MACON, Ga. – A four-run, ninth-inning rally was not enough as Mercer fell to Furman, 7-6, in game two of a Southern Conference series Sunday at OrthoGeorgia Park.
Â
The contest was the first of two games played between the conference rivals after Saturday was washed out due to heavy rain in the Macon area. The Bears dropped to 25-8 (5-2 SoCon) and lost their first conference series of the season. Furman improved to 16-15 (2-3).
Â
Mercer drew four one-out walks, an infield single and a RBI groundout while scoring on a wild pitch to cut Furman's advantage to one run in the bottom of the ninth. Furman sealed its second win of the series when Le Bassett fouled out to the first-base side with the tying run on third base.
Â
The near-comeback came up short after Furman had its own four-run frame in the seventh to knock out Mercer starter Chase Burks (4-2), who went 6.1 innings while taking the loss. Furman added a three-run home run in the first inning. Despite allowing six runs to the Paladins, Burks struck out a career-best 10 batters.
Â
Sean McDermott and Kyle Dockus tallied consecutive RBI singles in the second inning.
Â
Coach Gibson's Take
"I thought Chase Burks was really, really good today," said head coach Craig Gibson. "He dealt with some issues in the first inning, but outside of that was great. We had 15 strikeouts as a pitching staff in this game and it was tough not to pull it out.
Â
"You have to give Furman credit; they hit a couple balls out of the park and we made a couple mistakes that came back to haunt us later on."
Â
Player of the Game
Kyle Dockus (2-for-3) reached base three times, adding a walk to his two-hit performance. He doubled in the fourth and had a RBI single in the second inning as well.
