Robert Broom Named Perfect Game/Rawlings All-American

Mercer reliever named to the organizations’ Third Team
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Former Mercer relief pitcher Robert Broom was named a Third Team College All-American by Perfect Game/Rawlings as the organizations announced their slew of postseason awards Wednesday morning.

Broom, who was recently selected by the Cleveland Indians organization in the 10th round of the 2018 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, was a forced on the mound during his junior season. He was also named a Third Team All-American by Baseball America on May 31.

The right-handed sidewinder went 10-4 with a 1.70 earned run average over 74.0 innings and 31 appearances. He became just the 10th player in program history to record 100 or more strikeouts in a single season (111). Broom led the Southern Conference and ranked among national leaders in strikeouts per nine innings (third, 13.5), ERA (eighth, 1.70) and wins (10th, 10).

The Rising Fawn, Ga., native repeated as the SoCon's top relief pitcher, earning first team all-conference honors for the second straight year. Of his 31 appearances, 13 were three innings or more, including a standout performance at No. 1 Florida when Broom tossed 12 strikeouts over a career-long six innings to lead Mercer to a 6-4 win in Gainesville, Fla.

Broom was one of two SoCon players and one of three players from Georgia schools included on the Perfect Game/Rawlings College All-American teams.
