Mercer takes two of SoCon’s three weekly football honors
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Mercer redshirt freshman quarterback Robert Riddle and senior kicker Cole Fisher earned Southern Conference Player of the Week honors Monday following their performances against No. 9 Samford last week.
Â
Riddle was named SoCon Offensive Player of the Week while Fisher claimed SoCon Special Teams Player of the Week honors. It is the second time in Fisher's career that he has earned the conference's weekly honor.
Â
Riddle, a native of Lookout Mountain, Tenn., led the Bears to an upset victory over preseason SoCon favorite Samford with 316 passing yards and three total touchdowns (two rushing), out-dueling SoCon Preseason Player of the Year Devlin Hodges in the process. Riddle completed 23 passing to nine different receivers, including a 73-yard touchdown strike to Stephen Houzah in the fourth quarter that helped seal the victory.
Â
Fisher, a native of Walnut Grove, Ga., tied a career-high with three made field goals against the Bulldogs, including a pair during a pivotal fourth quarter. The senior missed his first attempt of the day, but responded with three straight successful tries; his final field goal was a 41-yard make that gave Mercer a two-score advantage with 4:37 remaining in the contest.
Â
Mercer (2-1, 1-0 SoCon) will host The Citadel (0-2, 0-2 SoCon) for Family Weekend at Five Star Stadium on Sept. 22 (4 p.m.). Tickets are available for purchase at tickets.mercer.edu or by calling the Mercer Ticket Office at (478) 301-5470.
