Coach Kayden's Take
"Our guys had a wonderful second round, one of the better 18-hole performances that we've had in my tenure at Mercer," said head coach Kirk Kayden. "Of course it was led by Stanton, but this was a great team performance with five guys shooting 72 or better.
"We made some birdies down the stretch on holes late in the day; that's not an easy thing to do when playing 36 holes in a single day. It shows that our team is tough mentally. The guys will get some good rest in anticipation for Tuesday's final round. There's plenty to play for and it's why you work hard in order to play for a win on the final day of a college tournament."
Mercer on Team Leaderboard
The Bears own sole possession of first place in the team standings through 36 holes, but are closely followed by tournament host Southern Miss (-4), which fired a tournament-low 273 in the second round. Mercer jumped five spots with its second-round 277.
Mercer is one of four teams under par through 36 holes, joined by Southern Miss, Troy (-3) and Missouri State (-3). The Bears are a full eight strokes ahead of Southern Conference foe Samford, which is in sixth place at 3-over-par.
Mercer on Individual Leaderboard
The Bears received outstanding individual performances from multiple golfers on Monday, led by Stanton Schorr, who picked up where he left off last spring. After shooting a steady 1-under-par in the first round, Schorr heated up with six birdies in the second round. Schorr owns a one-stroke lead on the field; Troy's Connor Futrell and Southern Miss' Matt Lorenz are both 4-under-par.
Freshman Martin Plukka impressed in his first day as a collegiate golfer and owns a tie for sixth place at 2-under-par (140). Plukka shot a second-round 68 to jump 15 spots into the top six.
