Program adds nine to 2020 signing class
MACON, Ga. – Mercer head baseball coach Craig Gibson has announced the signing of nine student-athletes to National Letters of Intent on Wednesday.
Â
The program will add nine student-athletes next August in Caleb Bohn, Declan Champey, Jackson Cherry, Wes Franklin, Leo Giannoni, Henry Gies, Trevor Rider, Garrett Sloan and Sam Stewart.
Â
2020 SIGNING CLASS
CALEB BOHNÂ Â Â Â Â
Cumming, Ga.
RHP | 6-4 | 190
Pinecrest Academy
Summer Ball – Team Elite
Â
Coach Gibson on Caleb
"Caleb has the body and arm that will make the pro scouts remember his name. His potential and feel for pitching is at a high level and he will add another power arm to our staff. The Bohn family is very athletic and Caleb has benefited from their pedigree. We spotted Caleb late on the recruiting trail and feel we found a star waiting to shine."
Â
DECLAN CHAMPEYÂ Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
New Bern, N.C.
RHP | 6-2 | 175
New Bern HS
Summer Ball – Dirtbags
Â
Coach Gibson on Declan
"Declan is a true definition of a pitcher; he has a three pitch mix that he can throw in any count to induce weak contact. Declan is a strike thrower and a winner. He was very impressive this summer and got better each time we saw him. Declan fits into our philosophy: high strikeout-to-walk ratio, attacking hitters early, winning the big moment with runners on and controlling the running game. The future is bright for this Tar Heel and the Bears."
Â
JACKSON CHERRYÂ Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
Forest, Va.
CF | L/R | 5-11 | 180
Jefferson Forest HS
Summer Ball – Dirtbags
Â
Coach Gibson on Jackson
"Jackson will bring toughness and some grit to our program. He leads by example and plays hard for all 27 outs. His versatility in the outfield will get him on the field early. His ability from the left side to lay down bunts and hit balls out of Claude Smith Field will be dangerous. Jackson will be a base stealing threat and raise havoc for opposing battery mates. We are thrilled the Virginia product will bring his talents to Macon for the next four years."
Â
WES FRANKLINÂ
Liburn, Ga.
RHP/INF | R/R | 6-4 | 200
Brookwood HS
Summer Ball – Team Elite
Â
Coach Gibson on Wes
"Wes is a power right-handed pitcher that can take over games. His fastball is overpowering and intimidating for hitters in the box. When Wes is on the mound, you know your team has a great chance to win that day. He has pitched some big games in high school and summer ball and always rises to the top. Wes is the starting shortstop for Brookwood HS, showing power potential at the plate. We look forward to watching and developing Wes into one of the best in the SoCon during his career. A highly touted recruit out of Brookwood, we are pleased we could keep one of the best right hand pitchers in the Peach State close to home."
Â
LEO GIANNONI
Marietta, Ga.
RHP | 6-2 | 185
Wheeler HS
Summer Ball – Nelson Baseball
Â
Coach Gibson on Leo
"Our program values side arm pitchers with great make-up and we found our next stopper in Leo. His command of his fastball and slider made him a valuable member of Team Georgia this summer. Leo's coaches always give him the ball when the team is in a jam or the game is on the line. A leader in the classroom and in the community, he shows up every time he has the ball in his right hand. Our defense is going to enjoy playing behind Leo."
HENRY GIES
Dunwoody, Ga.
C | R/R | 6-3 | 210
Dunwoody HS
Summer Ball – 643 DP
Â
Coach Gibson on Henry
"When looking at catchers, the first two things we look for is leadership and receiving ability; Henry has them both. He will make our staff better with his commitment in front of them. He played and learned from one of the best programs in the country this summer. We look forward to Henry following in former Dunwoody and Mercer grad Charlie Madden's footsteps behind the plate. Henry will also fit in great in our engineering department."
Â
TREVOR RIDERÂ Â
Lula, Ga.
SS | L/R | 6-4 | 195
P27 Academy
Summer Ball – Bodyshop
Â
Coach Gibson on Trevor
"We like big shortstops that can defend and shrink the field in the middle; and Trevor is a difference maker in the dirt. His arm strength will allow him to make plays and throw out runners with ease. His high baseball IQ and left-handed swing separated him from other shortstops in the '20 class. Trevor has developed a baseball savvy playing so many games for the P27 Academy. We are excited Trevor has decided to wear the Bears uniform starting in August."
Â
GARRETT SLOAN
Albany, Ga.
RHP | 6-4 | 175
Terrell Academy HS
Summer Ball – Game On
Â
Coach Gibson on Garrett
"Garrett came to camp last year as a junior and really impressed us. His slider is what sets him apart that will allow him to dominate hitters. Garrett led his team to the state championship game in 2019 and had a great summer. He continues to get stronger and his velocity has taken a jump in the last year. Garrett has outstanding athleticism and has a high ceiling on the mound – he's also a three-sport star at Terrell Academy."
Â
SAM STEWARTÂ
Gainesville, Ga.
C/1B | R/R | 6-0 | 200
Lakeview Academy
Summer Ball – Georgia Bombers
Â
Coach Gibson on Sam
"Sam was hurt during his junior year at Lakeview Academy so his recruiting started later than other 2020 grads. Sam made a big impression on us at our camp. Sam had a great showing in Jupiter and handled some top arms in the country."Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
