Sidney Otiwu Named SoCon Player of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Mercer linebacker Sidney Otiwu has been named the Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in the Bears' 36-33 triple overtime win over Samford, the league office announced on Monday.

Otiwu set a school record with 21 tackles in the game, paced by 14 in the first half of play. The redshirt junior led a Mercer defense that slowed the "Hatch Attack" – Samford's high-flying offense – down and held them to just 23 points in regulation.

The Buford native now leads the Bears with 79 tackles on the year and is one of four players on the team with an interception this season.

Otiwu and the Bears will host Wofford at 3 p.m. this Saturday at Five Star Stadium to close out their home slate. The game will serve as both Homecoming and Senior Day.
