Bears fall, 12-1, to No. 11 Seminoles on Saturday
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Mercer fell behind early and was defeated by No. 11 Florida State, 12-1, on Saturday afternoon at Dick Howser Stadium.
The Bears (8-3) suffered consecutive losses for the first time this season as Florida State (9-0) took the weekend series victory. Two rain delays totaled 74 minutes and impacted Mercer starting pitcher Tanner Hall, who took the loss with three innings pitched.
Mercer took a one-run lead with a RBI single from Zach Miller in the second inning. It was all Seminoles the rest of the way, as they struck with five runs in the third and 11 runs over a three-inning span. Five Bears saw action on the mound, including Beau Healy, who tossed 2.2 scoreless frames in relief late in the contest.
Trevor Austin went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the Bears offensively. Kel Johnson, who scored Mercer's lone run, led off the second inning with a double.
Coach Gibson's Take
"We gave a really good ball club too many free passes today and let things get away from us," said head coach Craig Gibson. "We were out of the game before it started, which made it tough to gain momentum in the later innings. In Tanner [Hall's] defense, he had to work around two different delays, which is never easy."
