Mercer Drops SoCon Opener to UNCG

RJ Yeager hits his seventh home run of the season
MACON, Ga. – Four Bears tallied multi-hit performances in Mercer's 9-4 loss to UNCG in the Southern Conference opener on Friday night at OrthoGeorgia Park.
Â
Mercer (11-12, 0-1 SoCon) fell behind early, rallied, and later squandered its lead to the visiting Spartans, who improved to 14-6 overall and 1-0 in conference action. RJ Yeager hit his seventh home run of the season and Alex Crotty was 3-for-4 with a RBI double in the loss. Left-hander Beau Healy tossed five innings in his fifth start, allowing six runs (four earned) while striking out four batters.
Â
The Spartans plated an unearned run in both the first and second innings to jump ahead of Mercer. Fielding miscues at first base and catcher led to the Bears' deficit. Mercer responded with a three-run second inning to take its first advantage. Crotty doubled home Trevor Austin, who reached on a walk. A RBI groundout by David Posas and one-run single by Kyle Dockus would tie the game and then give Mercer the lead.
Â
Healy got into trouble in the fifth as the Spartans tagged him for four hits, including a two-run home run. Mercer earned one run back in the home half of the fifth with Yeager's solo home run. UNCG added three more runs in the eighth to seal the six-run win.
