Kevin Coulter stifles Spartans over seven innings pitched
MACON, Ga. – Kevin Coulter allowed one run over seven innings pitched and Angelo DiSpigna hit a first-inning grand slam to power Mercer past UNCG, 8-1, in Southern Conference play on Saturday afternoon at OrthoGeorgia Park.
Â
Coulter's seven innings marked the longest outing for a Mercer pitcher this season and helped set up a rubber match between the Bears (12-12, 1-1 SoCon) and Spartans (14-7, 1-1) on Sunday. The senior right-hander improved to 3-0, scattering seven hits and three walks along the way while using a pair of double plays to his advantage.
Â
Coulter received all the run support he needed when DiSpigna cleared the bases with a grand slam in the home half of the first inning. UNCG starting pitcher Jeremiah Triplett walked the first three batters before DiSpigna made him pay with his fourth long ball of the season. The Bears drew 13 walks in the game, including eight in the first two frames.
Â
UNCG got on the board with an RBI single by Caleb Webster in a three-hit fifth inning. Coulter remained in the contest, however, and continued through the sixth as well despite walking two batters. Coulter retired three consecutive batters in the seventh to end his day.
Â
The Bears put the game out of reach in the eighth when RJ Yeager tripled into the right-field corner to plate Kyle Dockus, who reached on a walk and stole second base. Yeager later scored on a passed ball and was followed by an RBI single from DiSpigna and a safety squeeze bunt by Alex Crotty.
Â
Three Mercer relievers – Holton McGaha, Jackson Kelley and Sawyer Gipson-Long – allowed a combined one hit over three clean innings to end the game.
Â
Gibson's Take
"This was a much-needed win for us early in conference play against a quality team," said head coach Craig Gibson. "I've coached here a long time and the performance that Kevin Coulter gave us today was unbelievable. He put us in position to have good things happen and I'm very proud of what he did on the mound."
