The hire completes Mercer’s 2019 football coaching staff
MACON, Ga. – Mercer football head coach Bobby Lamb completed his program's 2019 coaching staff with the hiring of Chase Haslett as the Bears' tight ends coach on Thursday.
Â
Haslett was most recently a quality control assistant and offensive skill coach at Mississippi State, where he spent the 2018 season helping the Bulldogs reach the Outback Bowl with an 8-5 overall record. A former collegiate quarterback at Illinois and Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP), Haslett has had graduate assistant stints at both Mississippi State and Nebraska since 2016.
Â
"Chase is going to be a great fit for Mercer as our new tight ends coach," Lamb said. "He had a connection with [offensive coordinator] Bill Legg at Mississippi State and is another young, energetic coach that we've added to our staff this offseason. Chase has a strong knowledge of the game, coming from a successful football family."
Â
Haslett's father, Jim, won the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in 1979 and NFL Coach of the Year in 2000, when he was the head coach of the New Orleans Saints. After three seasons at Illinois, Haslett transferred to IUP, where he won the starting quarterback job for the 2014 season and threw for 2,178 yards and 16 touchdowns as a graduate student.
Â
Haslett earned his bachelor of science in recreation, sport and tourism from the University of Illinois in 2014 and his master of science in sport science from IUP in 2015. He is engaged to Paige Schumacher.
