Mercer Handed Road Loss at Georgia Southern
3/6/2019 9:53:00 PM | Baseball
Bears fall 13-3 to host Eagles
The Bears (9-5) took a one-run lead in the first inning but trailed as early as the second frame and were unable to muster a comeback before Georgia Southern (5-6) plated seven runs in a pivotal sixth inning.
Early defensive miscues hindered Mercer starting pitcher Josh Farmer, who allowed three unearned runs and turned it over to the bullpen by the third inning. Trailing 4-1 in the fifth, the Bears made some noise with a pair of runs to pull within one. Zach Miller led off the inning with a single and later scored when the Eagles threw the ball away on a sacrifice bunt by Kyle Dockus. A RBI groundout by Garrett Wilkinson in the next at bat plated David Posas, who reached base with a walk.
Nick Spear, Mercer's third of six pitchers in the game, could not finish the sixth as he surrendered a bases-clearing double in the gap that extended the Eagles' lead to 9-3. They would add four more runs against Mercer in the inning.
Mercer's first run of the game came on a RBI single by Collin Price in the first inning. Farmer (0-1) took the loss on the mound.
Coach Gibson's Take
"We didn't play good baseball tonight," said head coach Craig Gibson. "I thought our one bright spot was Kyle Bialousz's performance on the mound; he was outstanding and has had back-to-back strong outings in Tallahassee and here. [Bialousz] will be moving up on our pitching staff board.
"Our team isn't at the point where we can play well in consecutive mid-week games. We have a lot of young pieces that are hopefully learning and growing from this. The best part about baseball is that we get to start again on Friday at home."
