Five Mercer pitchers toss 16 strikeouts in 7-0 victory
MACON, Ga. – Mercer blanked Kennesaw State, 7-0, in a mid-week victory behind a 16-strikeout effort from five pitchers on Tuesday night at OrthoGeorgia Park.
Â
The Bears (17-20) won their second straight game in convincing fashion behind the collective pitching performance from Andrew Kane, Nick Spear, Scott Smith, Will Bowdoin and Josh Farmer, who held the Owls (17-21) scoreless on seven hits.
Â
With a scoreless tie on hand heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, Mercer plated four runs on a safety squeeze bunt by RJ Yeager and a three-run home run by Collin Price. Yeager's RBI bunt plated Jordan Ammons – who earned his first start of the year as the designated hitter – after he reached on a throwing error. Kel Johnson was intentionally walked after Yeager, bringing up Price, who deposited his long ball to left field.
Â
The Bears added three runs in the eighth thanks to a pair of Kennesaw State errors and a RBI infield single by Kyle Dockus. Smith improved to 2-2 with the win as he struck out two batters over the fifth and sixth frames. He was bookended by Spear and Bowdoin's appearances; both right-handers struck out six batters apiece.
