Bears Rally in Eighth for Series-Opening Win

Mercer scores four runs in the eighth to defeat ETSU, 5-4
MACON, Ga. – Freshman Collin Price delivered a go-ahead RBI double in the eighth inning, capping a four-run rally as Mercer defeated ETSU, 5-4, in a Southern Conference series opener at OrthoGeorgia Park on Friday night.
With Mercer (22-20, 9-7 SoCon) trailing, 4-3, Price drove in a pair of runs with two outs to put the Bears ahead in thrilling fashion. Mercer faced a 4-1 deficit entering the eighth inning before it spoiled ETSU starting pitcher Micah Kaczor's strong effort on the mound. ETSU dropped to 27-12 (7-5) while the Bears won their seventh straight contest.
Consecutive one-out singles by Trevor Austin and Kyle Dockus sparked the rally in the eighth. Jordan Ammons came through with a pinch-hit RBI double to the right-center gap that scored Austin and cut ETSU's lead to two runs. Kel Johnson walked to load the bases and was followed by a sacrifice fly from RJ Yeager, making it a one-run affair. Price then called game with his go-ahead, two-run double.
Nick Spear struck out two batters in the top of the ninth en route to earning his third save of the season while Will Bowdoin (1-0) picked up the win with a hitless eighth inning. The rally got Sawyer Gipson-Long off the hook after an impressive start for the Bears; the junior struck out 11 batters over seven frames despite leaving the game with ETSU in charge.
A RBI groundout to second base by Bill Knight scored Yeager in the second and gave Mercer an early one-run lead that proved to be short lived. ETSU plated all four of its runs in the third on four hits, including a two-run double by David Beam. Gipson-Long was electric outside of the third frame and pitched through the seventh for the first time this season.
