Bears defeat ETSU, 6-3, at home on Saturday
MACON, Ga. – Mercer won its eighth straight game and clinched a Southern Conference series victory by defeating ETSU, 6-3, on Saturday at OrthoGeorgia Park.
The Bears (23-20, 10-7 SoCon) rallied from an early two-run deficit to back up a strong start on the mound by senior Kevin Coulter (5-2), who tossed seven frames and held the Bucs (27-13, 7-6) to five hits.
A fielding error at second base – one of five errors on the day by ETSU – allowed Bill Knight to score from third base and tie the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning. Mercer claimed the lead in the following at bat when Angelo DiSpigna drew a bases-loaded walk, scoring Garrett Wilkinson. Mercer added insurance runs on a RBI single by Leyton Pinckney in the seventh and a two-run home run from Kel Johnson in the eighth.
ETSU jumped ahead, 2-0, in the top of the second when it tagged Coulter with three hits. The Bears cut into their deficit in the fourth when Garrett Wilkinson plated Johnson with a RBI single.
Scott Smith took over for Coulter in the top of the eighth and surrendered a pair of hits before Nick Spear relieved him. A sacrifice bunt and RBI single brought home one run for the Bucs and cut Mercer's lead to 4-3, but Spear tallied five consecutive outs to end the contest.
