Mercer Extends Streak with Weekend Sweep

Bears defeat ETSU, 6-0, for ninth straight victory
MACON, Ga. – Mercer busted out the brooms for a second straight weekend as it defeated ETSU, 6-0, on Sunday afternoon at OrthoGeorgia Park to sweep the Southern Conference series.
Â
The win was the Bears' ninth straight and pushed them to four games over .500 (24-20, 11-7 SoCon). Left-hander Tanner Hall silenced ETSU's bats over eight innings, scattering six hits while striking out four batters. Alex Crotty went 4-for-4 with one RBI and Garrett Wilkinson capped a strong week at the plate with his fourth home run of the season.
Â
Hall and Scott Smith – who tossed the ninth inning – did not allow an ETSU (27-14, 7-7) baserunner past second base all game. Freshman Bill Knight played a role in that when he threw out an advancing baserunner at third base from left field following a single in the top of the second.
Â
After three scoreless innings for both squads, Mercer broke it open with a three-run fourth. Collin Price (1-for-4) and Knight (1-for-4) drove in runs in consecutive at bats and Trevor Austin (2-for-2) added a RBI bunt single later in the inning to make it a 3-0 advantage.
Â
Wilkinson deposited a solo home run past the right-field wall in the sixth to extend the lead. Mercer put two more runs on the board for insurance in the eighth on Crotty's RBI double and a sacrifice fly by Austin.
