Mercer baseball signs its 11th member of 2019 class
MACON, Ga. – Mercer baseball head coach Craig Gibson announced Tuesday the signing of two-way standout Garrett Mathes out of Santa Fe College in Gainesville, Fla.
Mathes, a native of Tallahassee, Fla., is the first non-Georgia signee in Mercer's 2019 class. The Bears have now signed 11 future student-athletes that are set to join the program next fall.
"Garrett is a dynamic two-way guy who we expect to make an immediate impact on our program next year," Gibson said. "He is having a great year at Santa Fe and is poised to lead them to into the postseason. His skill set on the mound and at the plate is really impressive and we can't wait to get him to Macon."
A left-handed hitter and right-handed pitcher, Mathes has starred at first base and on the mound for the Saints since he joined the JUCO program for the 2018 season. He earned all-state and all-conference honors as a freshman after batting .391 with 43 runs batted in while posting a 2.15 earned run average and 30 strikeouts in 29.1 innings pitched.
Through 50 games as a sophomore, Mathes is batting .338 with six home runs, 41 RBI and 15 doubles and owns six saves in 18.1 innings pitched. He is averaging over 14 strikeouts per nine innings on the mound this spring. Mathes has excelled in the classroom at Santa Fe as well, earning Academic All-American honors last year.
Mathes played at Lawton Chilies High School in Tallahassee, where he posted an 18-2 record as a pitcher and batted .469 as a senior. He was two-time All-Big Bend First Team selection and a FACA All-Star.
