Â
Mercer entered the bottom of the seventh inning with a 4-3 lead before the Bruins tagged Bear relievers Andrew Kane and Holton McGaha for five runs on three hits. Belmont entered the eighth inning with an 8-4 lead and later extended its advantage with a two-run home run.
Â
The Bears struck first in the second inning with an RBI groundout by Bill Knight that scored Collin Price, who was one of three Mercer players to notch a hit in the frame. After Belmont tied the game, 1-1, in the bottom of the second, the Bears responded with Johnson's home run, which gave Mercer a 3-1 lead.
Â
Belmont tied the game at 3-3 with a pair of solo home runs in the third and fourth innings off Mercer starter Kevin Coulter, who tossed five innings and struck out four batters while issuing just one walk. Price put Mercer ahead, 4-3, with a RBI infield single in the top of the fifth, scoring Trevor Austin.
Â
Andrew Kane, Holton McGaha, Will Bowdoin and Kyle Bialousz relieved Coulter on the mound.
