Bears Drop Nonconference Finale at Georgia Tech
5/14/2019 9:16:00 PM | Baseball
Mercer falls, 7-1, to No. 6 Yellow Jackets on Tuesday
ATLANTA – Mercer surrendered a six-run fifth inning and fell to No. 6 Georgia Tech, 7-1, on Tuesday night at Russ Chandler Stadium.
Â
Seven Bears saw action on the mound as Mercer (28-24) concluded nonconference play with the road loss. The nationally-ranked Yellow Jackets improved to 36-15 overall.
Â
Both teams' bats were quiet through the first four innings; Mercer collected just two hits during the span – and four overall – on singles by Kyle Dockus and Trevor Austin. Georgia Tech broke the stalemate in the bottom of the fifth with six runs, four of which were credited to Mercer reliever Beau Healy.
Â
Healy replaced starter Andrew Kane in the bottom of the second and threw three innings, but got into trouble in the fifth when he allowed a RBI triple to Michael Guldberg, who then scored on a sacrifice fly from Kyle McCann. Healy left the game with two runners on base, both of which came home on another triple from Austin Wilhite against Scott Smith. The Yellow Jackets' big inning continued with a two-run single by Nick Wilhite.
Â
Trailing 7-0 in the top of the eighth, Mercer plated its lone run when Bill Knight, who roped a leadoff triple off the right-field wall, scored on a RBI groundout by Austin.
Â
Freshmen Peyton Berry and Will Bowdoin both tossed one scoreless inning apiece in relief.
