Paladins earn walk-off win in bottom of the 10th inning
Â
A walk-off RBI single by Jordan Starkes drove in David Webel, who led off the bottom of the 10th inning with a double, to seal the Paladins' (24-29, 12-11 SoCon) win. Mercer dropped to 29-25 overall and 14-9 in league play. Scott Smith (4-3) took the loss on the mound.
Â
The Bears trailed, 6-2, in the bottom of the fifth inning before the game was halted with a one-hour, 24-minute lightning delay. The delay shifted momentum in Mercer's favor as it scored five runs in the top of the seventh to claim a 7-6 lead. Consecutive doubles from Garrett Wilkinson and Bill Knight were followed by a RBI single by Kyle Dockus to pull the Bears within two runs, 6-4. Kel Johnson tied the contest with a two-run double into the right-center gap and then scored the go-ahead run on a RBI single from Collin Price.
Â
Furman tied the game, 7-7, in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings. Mercer left-hander Holton McGaha surrendered a leadoff double to John Michael Boswell, who then advanced to third base on a fielding error at shortstop; the Bears committed six errors in the game. A controversial play ensued during the next at bat. Banks Griffith laid down a sacrifice bunt that McGaha handled cleanly and threw to first base for the out. The return throw home from Angelo DiSpigna arrived before the runner, who was originally called out before being ruled safe after Leyton Pinckney dropped the ball.
Mercer's first two runs came off the bat of DiSpigna. The freshman hit a solo home run in the first and added a RBI double in the third. Furman scored its first five runs in the second against Mercer starter Kevin Coulter, who went just three innings. The Bears used eight pitchers on Friday.
