Mercer defeats ETSU 11-7, earns rematch with top-seeded Samford
Â
The fourth-seeded Bears (32-27) won their third game of the tournament and will face No. 1 Samford on Saturday night with a trip to the title game on the line. Mercer and Samford's game is a rematch of Thursday's 11-0 win by the Bulldogs.
Â
Trevor Austin (4-for-4) and Alex Crotty (2-for-2) provided an offensive punch with six of Mercer's 14 hits in the game. Crotty opened the game with a RBI double in the second inning and added his third home run of the tournament in the third. Austin's career day included two RBI singles and a one-run triple down the right-field line in the eighth.
Â
Kevin Coulter returned to the mound on two days of rest and tossed 3.1 innings. He left the game in the fourth with a 5-4 lead, turning it over to Taylor Lobus. Lobus had the best performance of his junior season, allowing just one run on four hits over 3.1 innings of relief while helping keep Mercer in front.
Â
The Bears' runs came in bunches throughout the game; they scored two in the second, three in the third, two in the sixth and two in the eighth en route to putting ETSU (34-21) away. After both teams plated a pair in the second, Mercer jumped ahead, 5-2, in the third on home runs by Collin Price and Crotty. Consecutive RBI doubles by Austin and Bill Knight padded Mercer's lead to 7-4 in the sixth.
Â
Nick Spear, Will Bowdoin, Andrew Kane and Jackson Kelley combined to throw the final 2.1 innings on the mound. The four pitchers were backed by four runs over the final two innings. Austin (triple) and Yeager (single) drove in runs in the eighth while Price and Angelo DiSpigna left the yard with back-to-back home runs to start the ninth. ETSU made things interesting with two runs in the bottom of the ninth before Kelley took over to notch his first career save by recording the last two outs of the game.
