Mercer Drops Athens Regional Opener to Georgia
5/31/2019 10:19:00 PM | Baseball
Bears fall 13-3; will face FAU in elimination game on Saturday
ATHENS – Mercer fell behind early and suffered a 13-3 loss to No. 4 nationally-seeded Georgia in the 2019 NCAA Baseball Championship Athens Regional on Friday night at Foley Field.
Â
The Bears (35-28) will face FAU (40-20), the Athens Regional's second-seeded team, in an elimination game at 1 p.m. (ET) on Saturday. Mercer dropped to 1-7 all-time in NCAA regional play.
Â
Trouble arrived early for Mercer as the Bulldogs (45-15) plated eight runs in the home half of the first inning. Mercer starter Tanner Hall left the game with a 3-0 deficit and the bases loaded, having recorded just two outs. Georgia tagged Hall and Jackson Kelley – the Bears' first reliever of the game – with a two-run home run and a grand slam, respectively, in the inning.
Â
The Bulldogs extended their lead to 13 by the end of the third. Kyle Dockus hit his first home run of the season, a three-run shot, in the top of the seventh to cut the Bears' deficit to 10 – he finished the contest 3-for-4 to lead Mercer offensively.
Â
Mercer received quality relief work on the mound from a trio of freshmen, Will Bowdoin, Holton McGaha and Josh Farmer. Bowdoin retired all six batters he faced and fanned three over the fifth and sixth frames while McGaha worked around one walk to strike out a pair in the seventh. Farmer, while allowing two hits, held Georgia scoreless for a fifth consecutive inning in the eighth.

Opening statement…
"Man, it was a tough environment. Georgia is as good as their national seed. [Tony] Locey was outstanding tonight — probably one of the best arms we've seen all year. He was dominant from the first pitch. Man, it's a great club. That's a fun club to watch up there. It's tough to be on the other side of it but man, they're good. I think our youth helped us last week to get to this point. I think it sort of showed in the first standing. We misplayed a couple balls that sort of opened the door for them and, you know, when you give those kind of clubs opportunities, things happen. They're very talented, and like I said, Locey was outstanding tonight."

On comparing the environment at Foley to others he's used to (GT)...
"When I played here before, I was playing for a rival. So, it's pretty heated, but tonight it was really a full house. It was really an electric environment, and that's fun. You know, you hear some things said to you that, you know, I couldn't repeat here, but like I said, the electric environment is a lot of fun for us as players, and I don't think that that really affected as much."
Kyle Dockus
On what his approach was for tonight's pitching game...
"I think we talked about it the day before, and he's a bigger guy and was kind of in his groove. So, I just wanted to see if he could field the ball getting off the mound. So, I first did that by trying to bunt it. He fielded the ball and knew what he was supposed to do, so you tipped the cap. Then, my second at-bat, he threw a fastball outside, and obviously he throws pretty hard. I swung through it and took a big swing, so I mentally knew I had to kind of shorten up my swing. Next, he threw the exact same pitch, and I just did whatever I could do with it and put it through the other way through the first and second base gaps."
