Payton Schanen is tied for second after shooting a 1-under-par in the opening round

GREENSBORO, Ga. – Redshirt senior Payton Schanen led the Mercer women's golf team in a strong opening round at the Reynolds Lake Oconee Invitational on Friday.

The Bears are tied with No. 22 Auburn for the team lead with a 5-over-par, led by Schanen's 1-under-par 71. The Alpharetta, Ga., native made a strong push on the back nine by sinking a trio of birdies on the 10th, 13th and 17th to finish the first day of the tournament in a tie for second.

"The Reynolds Lake Oconee staff at the Landing did an outstanding job preparing the course for play this morning after a record of amount of rainfall this week. I'm proud of the team's performance and our execution today. We had some process goals today that we were able to reach some of, and tomorrow we will try to check more of them off as well."

Mercer will continue the Reynolds Lake Oconee Invitational with the second round on Saturday. The Bears will tee off with Auburn and UNCW on holes 1a-3b at 11 a.m.
