Mercer won its first contest against an in-state school

ATLANTA, Ga. – The Mercer baseball team picked up its 13th win of the season on Tuesday evening after defeating in-state opponent Georgia State, 9-5, at the GSU Baseball Complex.

Josh Farmer pitched five innings of no-hit ball as he picked up his second win of the season. He struck out two. Angelo DiSpigna and RJ Yeager led the Bears (13-3) with two hits in the contest. Le Bassett came off the bench and collected four RBI.

Over the first five innings of the contest both pitching staffs controlled the game as neither team allowed a hit. In the top of the third, Collin Price was hit by a pitch and Kyle Dockus reached on an error, but the next two batters struck out, ending the inning.

The Bears picked up the first hit of the game in the top of the sixth inning when Colby Thomas doubled. DiSpigna singled for the second hit of the inning, which scored Thomas, putting Mercer ahead 1-0. Yeager followed with the third hit in a row for Mercer, placing two on base.

The next three batters for the Bears all drew walks, two of which brought in a run, giving Mercer a 3-0 advantage. The fourth run of the inning came in on an RBI ground out. Bassett scored the fifth run of the frame on a Panther wild pitch.

Mercer continued to tack on runs in the top of the seventh inning. The Bears scored four runs on four hits to grow their lead to 9-0. Yeager picked up an RBI double and Bassett hit a three-run home run for the visitors in the frame.

Georgia State (8-7) chipped away at the Mercer lead and scored its first run of the game in the bottom of the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly by Daino Deas.

In the eighth inning, the Panthers scored three runs on two hits. GSU's second run of the game came on a sacrifice fly and third run on an RBI groundout. Will Mize picked up an RBI single in the inning, trimming the Bears' lead to five, 9-4.

GSU scored once in the ninth before Holton McGaha closed out the game with a strikeout looking. Mercer came away with a 9-5 win.

Coach Gibson's Take
"You can't talk enough about the outing Josh Farmer had tonight. He was outstanding on the road tonight against a Sun Belt team, and he has given us quality outings. He is starting to grow into a starter for us. Offensively, it was tough early in the contest, but once we got some good at-bats we started to get the bats going. It was nice to see Le Bassett come off the bench and hit the ball out of the park. I am pleased to go on the road and get a win and we can't wait to face Bradley this weekend."

Josh Farmer came out dealing for the Bears. In his five innings of work, he did not allow the Panthers to collect a hit. He struck out two batters as he picked up his second win of the season.
