Tyler Copp won the 109th Michigan Amateur Championship on Friday afternoon
HARBOR SPRINGS, Mich. – Mercer men's golfer Tyler Copp captured the title at the 109th Michigan Amateur Championship presented by Carl's Golfland at Boyne Highlands Resort on Friday afternoon. Â
Â
The Ann Arbor, Mich., native defeated James Piot, a rising senior at Michigan State, in the finals, 2 and 1. This was Copp's first tournament victory since winning the high school regional tournament as a senior in his first year of competitive golf.
Â
"My game was steady all week, and I never gave my opponents much, including in the championship match," remarked Copp. "Out of the 96 holes I played in match play, I only trailed for two of them which is a testament to how in control I was. This is definitely the best moment of my golf career so far, but I'll be right back at it tomorrow as I look to continue to improve my game."
Â
After the first two rounds of stroke play, Copp sat tied for 13th at +2 through 36 holes. He began match play in the round of 64 with a 2 and 1 win over Drew Coble, a rising sophomore at Grand Valley State, before topping rising Spring Arbor junior Rory Myers 5 and 4 to advance to the next day. Copp began Thursday with a round of 16 win over Andrew Walker, a recent graduate of Michigan State, by the score of 2 and 1. He later defeated Michigan State's Charlie Green, who was a redshirt senior this past season, 4 and 2.
Â
On the final day of competition, Copp rolled into the final with a 7 and 5 decision over Logan Price, a rising sophomore at Tiffin before taking the crown with a 2 and 1 win over Piot.
Â
"I'm very proud of Tyler winning the Michigan Am," stated head coach Kirk Kayden. "It's a special win for him. His hard work has paid off with all aspects of his golf game. I'm looking forward to a great year out of Tyler this coming year."
