Mercer Student-Athletes Excel in Classroom

112 Mercer student-athletes achieved a perfect 4.0 in the 2020 spring semester
MACON, Ga. – Mercer University prides itself on academic success to allow its students to discover their passions, hone their skills and embrace impactful opportunities to use their education in service to others.
The student-athletes at Mercer are no different, as they averaged a 3.620 grade-point average for the 2020 spring semester with 90 percent earning at least a 3.0. Additionally, 112 student-athletes achieved a perfect 4.0 GPA on the semester.
"Success in the classroom is a priority for our student-athletes, and I'm proud of how well they finished the spring semester despite the challenges they faced," remarked Assistant AD for Student-Athlete Support Services Matt Brownback. "This spring was unprecedented on several levels and the move to virtual classes wasn't easy for anyone. We have a fantastic student-athlete support staff that worked tirelessly to make that transition seamless for our student-athletes. Our student-athletes' determination really speaks to not only the type of kids our coaches recruit, but their understanding of the high standards we uphold at Mercer. Being recognized by the SoCon as the top academic school, we've set a precedent of excellence at Mercer and I'm proud of our student-athletes for rising to that challenge once again."
Mercer has earned the Barrett Bonner Award each of the last four years. The award is given to the Southern Conference School that places the highest percentage of its student-athletes on the league's academic honor roll.
All 18 of Mercer's athletic programs had at least one player record a 4.0 GPA in the spring with football leading the way with 14. Baseball and men's lacrosse followed closely behind with 13 apiece. Additionally, women's tennis (75.0 percent) and women's cross country (54.5 percent) were the only teams where at least half of the student-athletes had a perfect semester in the classroom.
