Mercer Earns ABCA Academic Excellence Award

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer baseball team was one of 64 NCAA Division I programs to receive the 2020 Team Academic Excellence Award from the American Baseball Coaches Association on Tuesday.

Mercer was one of three Southern Conference schools to be recognized with the award, joining Samford and The Citadel. The Bears have now received the award in each of the past four seasons.

The Bears are coming off a spring semester that saw the team post a 3.7 GPA and had 13 student-athletes earn a perfect 4.0.

Teams from every level of college and high school baseball were recognized with the award, which highlights programs coached by ABCA members that posted a grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale for the entire 2019-20 academic year. A record 424 programs received this year's award.

The ABCA has a long tradition of recognizing the achievements of baseball coaches and student-athletes. The ABCA/Rawlings All-America Teams are the nation's oldest, founded in 1949, and the ABCA's awards program also includes the ABCA/Rawlings All-Region Awards, the ABCA/Diamond Regional & National Coaches of the Year and several other major awards such as the ABCA Hall of Fame and the Dave Keilitz Ethics in Coaching Award.
