RJ Yeager named to the Bobby Bragan Collegiate Slugger Award Watch List
FORT WORTH, Texas – Mercer's RJ Yeager was named to the 2021 Bobby Bragan Collegiate Slugger Award (BBCSA) watch list for the first time in his career. The announcement was made earlier this week.
Â
The BBCSA is based on performance at the plate, academics and personal integrity. Presented by SR Bats, the award was created by the Bobby Bragan Youth Foundation. There are 48 student-athletes representing 17 conferences around the country.
Â
Yeager garnered Preseason All-Conference honors at shortstop for the third straight season on Thursday. He was named a Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American during his first season with Mercer and earned a spot on the Academic All-SoCon Team in both the 2019 and 2020 seasons. During the 2020 season, he hit .263 while starting all 16 games for the Bears. Yeager tallied 11 RBIs throughout the shortened season and had four extra base hits with one home run.
Â
The BBCSA originally started out in 2017 as an honor going to the top college hitter in Texas. In 2019, the BBCSA expanded becoming a regional award covering Division I programs in Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico and Oklahoma. Last year, the BBCSA became a national award; however, no winner was announced due to the Covid-19 virus which cut the college baseball season short.
Â
The winner of the BBCSA will be announced in June and honored at a gala in the fall at the Fort Worth Club. Fans can follow news about the Bobby Bragan Collegiate Slugger Award presented by SR Bats and its Player of the Week honorees during the season at www.braganslugger.com.
Yeager and the Bears open the season on Friday, Feb. 19 when North Alabama comes to OrthoGeorgia Park. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
