
Bears Power Past Georgia State

Mercer tallied eight extra-base hits in the win
MACON, Ga. – Mercer baseball exploded for 17 runs in a 17-4 win over visiting Georgia State on Wednesday evening at OrthoGeorgia Park. The Bears tallied eight extra-base hits with five being home runs.

RJ Yeager led the team with three hits and four RBI in the game. Yeager tallied his first multi-home run game of the season in the victory. Jordan Ammons also had four RBI as he crushed a grand slam in the contest. Mercer's pitching staff tallied 10 punch-outs in the win.

After a scoreless first inning, the Bears' bats came to life in the second. Angelo DiSpigna led off with a double. Following the first out of the inning, Le Bassett and Colby Thomas drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. Trevor Austin followed with an RBI walk, putting the Bears on the board. Bill Knight followed with a sac fly, and Mercer led 2-0.

Robert Bennett came in during the top of the third inning and kept the Panthers quiet. After a bunt single, Collin Price threw out Blaine Marchman trying to steal second. Bennett settled in and tallied back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning.

The Bears added two more runs in the bottom of the third. Brandon Michie drew a walk to lead off the inning. Garett Delano followed with a home run to left field, putting the Bears ahead 4-0. This was Delano's sixth bomb of the season.

Georgia State started coming back in the top of the fourth. Griffin Cheney led off the inning with a home run, and Josh Smith followed with a single. The Panthers stayed hot as Elian Merejo hit a home run to left field, and the Bears' lead was down to one, 4-3. Following a pitching change, the Panthers' bats cooled off and they did not score another run in the frame.

Mercer added five runs in the bottom of the fourth, extending the lead to six runs. With one on and one out, Yeager crushed a home run to left-center to put Mercer ahead, 6-4. Later in the inning, with runners on first and third, Brandon Michie scored on a wild pitch. Collin Price followed with a two-run home run, growing the Bears lead to 9-3.

The Bears' pitching staff kept the Panthers bats quiet over the next three innings while expanding the lead. In the bottom of the fifth, Thomas was hit by a pitch and then stole second base. He came in to score on a Trevor Austin single, and the Bears led 10-3. After a fielder's choice, Yeager came up and crushed his second home run of the game and grew the lead to 12-3.
Mercer was not done scoring runs. With one out, Jackson Cherry doubled down the right field line in the seventh inning. David Burke followed with a walk, and Ryan Archibald was hit by a pitch, loading the bases. It looked as if the Panthers would get out of trouble as they got the next hitter o hit an infield fly. Ammons came up with the bases loaded and blasted a grand slam to extend the Orange & Black's lead to 16-3.
Georgia Stated got one run in the top of the eighth inning when Lavoisier Fischer hit a solo home run down the right-field line.

The Bears put together timely hits in the bottom of the eighth inning to score another run. Trevor Rider led off with a walk, and Antonio Brown singled to left field. Following an out, Cherry drew a walk, which loaded the bases. After the second out, Archibald extended the Bears' lead to 17-4 with an RBI single.

Fred Wilson came into close out the game and only allowed one hit in the ninth inning and got Branson Bowling to fly out to end the game. Mercer came away with a 17-4 victory.
