He has been part of the Mercer football program since 2017.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. –  Mercer football defensive lineman Barron King was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District IV First Team, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America on Thursday afternoon.
Academically, King had an impressive 3.62 GPA as a marketing major. The 6-foot-2-inch King was Mercer's lone representative on the District IV team and was part of a quartet of defensive linemen to receive recognition, joining Marcus Cushine (Alabama A&M) Tarron Jackson (Coastal Carolina) and Gi'Narious Johnson (South Alabama). King, offensive lineman Ryan Johnson (Georgia Tech), linebacker Nakobe Dean (Georgia) and special teams player Seth Glausier (Georgia State) were the four players honored from Georgia.Â
In four seasons with the Orange & Black, King appeared in 31 games and recorded 64 tackles – 15 solo and 49 assisted. He also recorded six tackles for loss for a total of 32 yards and sacked two opposing quarterbacks for a total loss of 22 yards.
King used his redshirt year during his first season in 2017, but made an impact in 2018, playing in 10 games and making eight tackles and one tackle for loss. His best statistical season came in 2019 when he appeared in 11-of-12 contests and made 45 tackles. He was credited with a career-high eight stops in a home game against Chattanooga in October 2019.
During the 2020-21 season, King made 20 tackles – three solo and 17 assisted – and had 2.5 tackles for loss for a total of three yards. The Gainesville, Ga., native recovered a pair of fumbles – first against Abilene Christian in October and again at VMI in March. His season-high of four tackles came in a win over Western Carolina.
