Garett Delano earned second team honors as a utility player
LUBBOCK, Texas – Mercer's Garett Delano was selected as a College Baseball Foundation Second Team All-American the organization announced on Wednesday. This is the second annual All-American team for the College Baseball Foundation (CBF).

Thanks to the growth and success of the CBF's three staple awards – the National Pitcher of the Year Award, the Brooks Wallace Award recognizing the top shortstop in the game and the John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award – the CBF is once again honoring the top players from 2021 with its All-American team. These players brought great success and attention for themselves and their teams and have proven to be outstanding ambassadors to the college game. To view the complete teams, click here.

The players were chosen from voting done by the Foundation's award committees. For more information on the All-American team or the other College Baseball Foundation Awards, go to www.collegebaseballfoundation.org.

"Garett had an outstanding season for us on the mound and at the plate," remarked Head Coach Craig Gibson. "There is nobody more deserving of this. Garett was a huge piece of our success this year on the diamond."

Delano, a graduate student from Callahan, Fla., was an infielder and right-handed pitcher for the Bears. He led the team in batting average, .337 and runs batted in 52. Delano showed off his power as he hit nine home runs and 13 doubles. On the mound, he made 15 appearances - 12 starts and 3 in relief. He posted a 6-1 record and 4.32 ERA. Delano tallied 60 strikeouts to only 20 walks and held opponents to a .231 average through a team-high 81.1 innings.

Following his first start as a Bear against Marshall, he was named the John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Week. Delano tossed seven innings of two-hit baseball against the Thundering Herd while fanning a career-high 11 batters. In the same game, he went two-for-four at the plate.

Against The Citadel on May 14, Delano tossed a career-high 8.2 innings and fanned four batters while limiting the Bulldogs to only three hits in the game.

Delano was one of two Bears to earn First Team All-SoCon honors. He earned first team honors at second base and second team honors as a starting pitcher. He was the only player in the Southern Conference to take home two honors for two positions.
