Mercer football welcomes two transfers to the team for 2021
MACON, Ga. – Mercer Head Football Coach Drew Cronic has announced the additions of Devron Harper and Jason Poe for the upcoming 2021 season.
Â
Harper, a wide receiver from Conyers, Ga., joins the Bears after playing at Gardner-Webb for the 2019 season and the 2021 spring season. Harper will have three years of eligibility remaining. During the spring 2021 season, Harper was second on the team with 16 receptions and 171 receiving yards. As a return specialist, Harper returned eight punts with two going for touchdowns. He had five kickoff returns and tallied 144 yards.
Â
Following the spring season, Harper was named the Big South Special Teams Player of the Year and earned All-Big South honors at three different positions. He was a first team honoree as a punt returner and kick returner specialist and was a second team selection at receiver.
Â
During his freshman season, Harper saw action in 12 games and was second on the team with 51 receptions and 653 yards and four touchdowns. His longest career reception came against Hampton on Oct. 12, 2019.
Â
"We are very excited to have Devron join our program," remarked Wide Receivers Coach La'Donte Harris. "He is one of the most electrifying players I have seen on the football field. He can do so many things on the field as a receiver and in the return game. I am so excited about his future at Mercer and can't wait to see him work this offseason getting prepared for this fall. The sky is the limit for Devron, and he is going to have every opportunity to achieve success on and off the field here at this great university."
Â
Poe, an offensive lineman, comes to Mercer from Lenoir-Rhyne, as a graduate transfer. He played three seasons for the Bears and during the 2019 season, Poe was named a second team selection and repeated as the South Atlantic Conference's Jacobs Blocking Trophy winner. Poe was tabbed a Second Team All-American by D2CCA and garnered a First Team selection by the D2 Associated Press.
Â
"We are extremely excited about the addition of Jason Poe to our football program," stated Co-Offensive Coordinator Bob Bodine. "He brings a lot of experience within our offensive system. He is a very explosive, quick player and a great competitor. He will be awesome to have in the locker room."
The 2019 season was Poe's second straight campaign he was an All-America; he was a Don Hansen Second Team All-American in 2018. Poe, who has won two straight South Atlantic Conference Jacobs Blocking Trophy awards, helped the Bears to be a top-10 rushing offense in Division II in 2019.

The Bears open the season on Thursday, Sept. 2 against Point University at Five Star Stadium. Season tickets for the 2021 season are available now. To purchase season tickets, click here.
