There were 2,740 selections across the Southern Conference.
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Mercer Bears led the Southern Conference with 336 of the league's 2,740 Honor Roll selections, the league office announced on Thursday afternoon.
Conference office officials honored a total of 2,740 student-athletes with a spot on the honor roll. In order to be eligible for the Southern Conference Honor Roll, student-athletes must have a 3.0 grade-point average for the year. 785 student-athletes received Commissioner's Medals for having at least a 3.80 GPA, and 264 student-athletes ended the 2020-21 academic year with a perfect 4.0 GPA. Each of the numbers are a league high. While the Bears led the way with 336 selections, eight of the SoCon's schools had at least 200 selections.
In addition to leading the conference's 27 members (10 full-time and 17 associate), which has happened each year since joining the SoCon, Mercer placed more than 300 student-athletes on the honor roll for the fifth consecutive academic year. 91 of Mercer's selections received the Commissioner's Medal, and the school boasted 39 selections with a 4.0. Both numbers are second only to The Citadel's 93 and 41, respectively.
11 of Mercer's 18 athletic programs had at least 10 honorees and all 18 teams had at least seven student-athletes receive a place on the SoCon Honor Roll. Football led the way with 50 selections followed by men's lacrosse (44) baseball (37), women's lacrosse (37) and women's soccer (28).
Women's soccer led the way with six student-athletes achieve a perfect GPA and was followed closely by its male counterpart in the same sport, which had five with five. Both baseball and women's lacrosse had four athletes end the year with a 4.0 grade-point average.
The academic honor roll originated in 1988-89, when SoCon athletic directors established the award as a way to recognize the league's outstanding student-athletes. The academic honor roll consists of student-athletes who participated in varsity sports and posted a 3.0 grade point average or higher for the academic year, were eligible the entire academic year and were members of the final squad lists. The award is different from the academic all-conference award, announced Wednesday, which is determined by cumulative GPA and involves a participation requirement.
