Jonsson Tied For Lead
Spartanburg, S.C.—Individually, Monday at the Carolina Cup was a great day for Mercer golfer, Tobias Jonsson. Collectively, not so much for the Bears.
After leading the 14-team field with an opening day of six under on the par-72 Carolina Country Club, Mercer slipped to a 10 over 298 on Monday, and sits in fifth place, 13 shots behind second round leader Lipscomb.
Jonsson, however followed his opening round 70 with a five-under 67, and his 137 (-7) has him tied for the lead with Khavish Varadan of Alabama-Birmingham.
"Tobias played well," Bears' coach Jason Payne said. "Some tough hole locations today on some fast real fast greens. We didn't do a great job of playing the par 5's well."
Behind Jonsson, for the Bears are Rece Moore (68-78-146 +2); Gustav Sjoberg (67-79-146 +2); Jonathan Parker (77-74-151 +7); and Trey Mixon (77-85-162 +18).
At -9 Lipscomb is one shot ahead of UAB on the team leaderboard. The second-place Blazers shaved 16 shots off their team score from Sunday to Monday. Payne thinks the Bears can stage that kind of turnaround in Tuesday's final round.
"A good round on Tuesday will put us back in the hunt," Payne said.
Mercer tee times for Oct. 11's final round start at 8:45 a.m. Live scoring updates are available at Golfstat.com. Â https://results.golfstat.com//public/leaderboards/gsnav.cfm?pg=participants&tid=26416
