Lead By 11 Heading Into Final Round
Kennesaw, Ga.—In their first two fall tournaments, middle round struggles hampered the Mercer men's golf team. The Bears flipped that script in the second round of the Pinetree Intercollegiate Tournament In Kennesaw on Oct. 17.
Mercer was the only team to have a team round under par in the second round. The Bears had solid rounds from all five golfers, and as a result did not have any scoring rounds over par. Mercer's second round total of 8-under 280 puts the Bears -6 for the tournament, and gives the Bears an 11-shot lead over second place Francis Marion (+5) , heading into the final 18 holes.
"Good second round for the team. It was a very windy afternoon and the whole team put together a solid under par round," coach Jason Payne said. "We are excited to be in contention heading into the final 18 holes tomorrow."
All five Bears are in the top 25. Tobias Jonsson is in second place at 4-under, two shots behind tournament leader Carlos Garre of Francis Marion. Mercer's Trey Mixon sits sixth at one under. Rece Moore is also in the top 10, tied for ninth at +1. Gustav Sjoberg had the big jump from the first round when he was tied for 41st, to his second round standing tied for 14th, following his round of three under par, that leaves him +2 for the tournament. Jonathan Parker rounded out the Bears's second round scoring contingent with a one under 71 and sits tied for 23rd at +5.
August Jording is competing at the tournament as an individual, and his score does not figure in the Bears' team totals. He's had rounds of 77 and 76 on the par-72 Pinetree Country Club course. At +9 Jording is tied for 41st.
Tee times for the Bears on Oct. 18 begin at 9:50 a.m. Live scoring updates are available from results.golfstat.com.
