MACON, Ga. – The Mercer infield will feature a lot of experience. The Mercer faithful will recognize a majority of the infield with a couple new faces who will look to make an impact.
Angelo DiSpigna will line up at first base this season for the Bears. He's a fourth-year player that brings plenty of experience to Mercer. DiSpigna was named the Perfect Game Preseason All-Conference First Baseman. Last season, the Bears first baseman hit .266 with 14 doubles and a team high of 15 homeruns. DiSpigna recorded a .563 slugging percentage and a .391 on base percentage. He would start all 57 of the Bears' contests during his 2021 campaign.
Ryan Archibald and Le Bassett are two of the other players who can see time at first this season.
Trevor Austin will most likely get the nod at second base. Austin has proven himself as one of Mercer's best defenders. He earned a spot on the All-SoCon second team as a third baseman last season. He started all 57 games for Mercer last spring and hit .297, going 54-for-182. Of his 54 hits, five were doubles, which was a single-season high for him. From the nine spot, he batted in 17 runs. He had an on-base percentage of .393 during his 2021 campaign.
Antonio Brown will also see time at second base for the Bears this season.
At shortstop will be William Mapes. He's a transfer from North Georgia. He's a graduate guy who will truly anchor the middle of the infield for the Bears.
Trevor Austin and Dominik Ramil both have the ability to see time at shortstop as well.
David Burke will start at third for the Bears this season. He was named second team preseason All-SoCon this year. Last season, Burke played in 39 games, making 19 starts for Mercer. He recorded a .309 batting average while hitting five doubles and a trio of homeruns, totaling eight RBIs on the season. He posted a .515 slugging percentage and .378 on base percentage while recording a perfect fielding percentage.
Jozsef Rohrbacher is another player who can play several of the infield positions.
